Pica & Morsel

A young boy, Pica, living in Roman Somerset in 351 AD, has made a dormouse his pet. The rodent was due to be eaten but Pica rescued it from the fattening pot, named it Morsel, and has taught it to play dead. Unfortunately, the cook has discovered that her starter has escaped and suspects Pica. Her furious questioning of the boy allows the dormouse to escape from its cage and sets off a train of near-death experiences for poor Morsel:  a ferocious dog, the house cat, Pica’s murderous big brother, his sister and parents, the cook and the furnace slave, all attempt to end Morsel’s life. Only Pica’s courage, and that of the little mouse, can bring about a happier ending.
